Alphonse Mexill Etongo Deceased

Senator Alphonse Mexill Etongo died on July 25, 2015. Born on August 23, 1959 in Impfondo Likouala Department, Mr. Etongo began his studies at the public school of Dongou in 1966 and graduated in 1971 with a certificate of primary and elementary study (CEPE). He then completed secondasry shool at Etienne Mongha College where he obtained his junior secondary school diploma (brevet d'études du premier cycle - BEPC) and in 1979, he received his high school baccalaureat from the Technical High School. At Marien Ngouabi University Mr. Etongo his bachelor in economics and a masters two years later.

Mr. Etongo started his career as Associate at the Planning Department of the Coffee and Cocoa Agency (OCC) in 1984 and then went on to hold several government positions. In 1985, he was appointed Economic Advisor with rank and prerogatives of Central Director at the Ministry of Defence and Security. In 1986 he returned to the OCC after serving as Economic and Financial Advisor in the Policy Division of the army. In 1988, he took over as the head of the Department of Logistics at the Commission of Marketying of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. He subsequently held a number of roles, including: Director General of Forestry and Industrial Economics (SOFORIB_SA) at the Ministry of Forestry in 1996; Education Advisor to the Education and Health Commission in the Senate in 2002; Attaché on Social Affairs at the Committee to Monitor Implementation of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement, and; Director of Studies and Planning at the Ministry of Helath and Population from 2005 to 2007.

At 17, the young Etongo became a member of the Union of Congolese Socialist Youth, in 1976. In 2006, he joined the 2002 Party for Unity, where he was responsible for the evaluation and control of the M’filou 2 Political District in 2007. In 2008, he was elected a member of the Executive Board of the administrative division of Brazzaville, where he was put in charge of civic and political education.

Shortly afterwards, he was elected member of the political bureau at the end of the first extraordinary Congress held in 2014. In 1992, Mr. Etongo joined the Senate as Economic and Financial Advisor and in 1994 he became Advisor on Local Communities in the same cabinet. In 2008, he was elected Departmental and Municipal Advisor to the city of Brazzaville to manage the 7th district of M’filou. He was reelected in 2014 during local elections to the same role for the 9th district of Djiri.

Mr. Entongo died while serving as a Senator in the upper House of Parliament. Until his body was carried to the Palace of Congress, his body was exhibited in the conference room of the hotel de ville of Brazzaville for a final farewell by friends, family, and the departmental and municipal councilors of Brazaville. Before the tearful crowd, the Secretary of the Departmental and Municipal Council, Emma Clesh Atipo Ngapi, gave a eulogy to the departed.

Mr. Etongo died July 25, 2015 at the University Hospital of Brazzaville and was laid to rest on August 4, 2015 at the Bouka cemetery. He leaves behind a widow and five (5) children.
